Shortlisted for the Southern Cross University Artists' Book Award 2011

Statement
A Sydney undertaker uses pink and blue coffin tags to identify the gender and name of their deceased. My artwork
from recycled tags suggests the levelling and stillness associated with death. The infinite stories of the deceased
and the dignified rituals of the funeral staff construct a ‘barcode of life’.
Dimensions
6 X 183 X 11 cm
Materials
Approx 2,600 recycled coffin name tags, PVC tubing, and brass screws.
With thanks to
The management and staff of WN Bull Funeral Directors, Newtown, especially Richard White, former bereavement counsellor, and Patsy Healy, general manager. |
